Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) and Si Se Puede Foundation (SSPF) provide a chemistry course for SSPF engineering students during their fall and spring school breaks. Students are immersed into a college chemistry class with college students, are assigned an experiment at the beginning of the course and at the end of the course present their findings to the class.
The students are introduced to the concepts of acids and bases. Some key terms the students will be learning are acids, bases, pH scale/value and litmus paper. The main point to this lesson is learning what some acids and bases are. As well, as take part in a lab in which they will classify different substances as acids or bases.
After completing the lesson on acids and bases, sixth grade students will be able to correctly identify items as acids or bases by using a PH test 100% of the time. More specifically, the learners will be able to:
- display appropriate behaviors when doing the labs.
- list the common properties of acids and bases.
- classify substances as acids or bases, by using pH and litmus tests.
- explain the pH scale.
